🌿 No Coriander Union (不要香菜联合)
A quiet revolution and solidarity sparked by a single herb.
1978, a quiet alley in Zhongshan District, Taipei.
Inside a small, unassuming restaurant, the menu was ordinary—but something unusual began to happen.
Day by day, more customers made the same request:
“Please make sure there’s no coriander in my food.”
“It would be perfect… if it weren’t for the coriander.”
At first, the owner dismissed them as picky eaters.
But one day, a realization struck:
More than 20 people a day were asking for the same thing.
All of them said things like:
“It tastes like soap.”
“It overpowers every other flavor.”
“I can’t breathe when I eat it.”
That day, the restaurant added a simple line to its menu:
“Coriander-free options available. 不要香菜可.”
🪑 Natural Separation → Accidental Solidarity
Strangely enough, those who requested “no coriander” often ended up sitting at the same corner of the restaurant.
They didn’t know each other, but they shared a very specific understanding—
A bond of unfamiliar yet precise empathy.
This quiet connection grew into something more.
Then, one night, Someone scribbled the words “NO CORIANDER UNION (不要香菜联合)” on a napkin and left it on the table.
The owner taped it to the wall.
A union was born.

🎨 The Origin of the Logo:
Was it the owner? A customer? No one really knows.
To this day, no one knows who created the now-iconic logo:
A red circle with a forbidden symbol, a coriander illustration in the middle, and the words “NO CORIANDER UNION (不要香菜联合)” surrounding it.
“Some say the owner doodled it on a menu. Others say it was a visiting designer just playing around.”

🍽️ Hatred for coriander? Or the silent cry of your genes?
Turns out, this wasn’t just about personal preference.
Scientific research shows that people who perceive coriander as tasting like soap or metal may have a specific gene: OR6A2.
This gene is sensitive to aldehydes—molecules that happen to be present in coriander.
It’s not just a cultural thing. It’s molecular.
If you hate coriander, it’s not your fault.
Your DNA made that decision for you.
⸻
“I love food. I just don’t want it to taste like soap.”
Today, the No Coriander Union (不要香菜联合) continues to quietly declare gustatory independence at tables around the world.
